Room 23 Travel Guide

Room 23's hot tips for what to do in the holidays!

Joel went to the Sunshine Coast in Australia and he thinks that the best two places to go to are.. Hervey Bay & Frazer Island.

Hervey Bay has a unique underwater wildlife to boast. If you love whales, this is the place to go! With it's beautiful weather and gorgeous location, this is a must go to place for beach people and couples!

Frazer Island is probably nicer than some places in Fiji! It's golden sand beaches have a shipwreck grounded ashore which is sure to fascinate anyone! But, also is a great place for getting a tan and a long walk.

The ship went through a lot, but was eventually sold to Japan for scrap and the rudders were removed, but when they were heading through Queensland in a cyclonic storm, it drifted ashore.

2. Jacob thinks that Mangawhai surf beach is a top vacation spot, and when you go you'll see what he means!

With magnificent views and great waves for surfing, this beach is a great beach for anyone, surfer or not. But, the waves can get huge there, the beach offers and efficient life guard team.

3. Elliott thinks that Freddy's Ice House is a must do for a cold drink in the city. A room purely made of ice, with sculptures games and cool objects, this freezing ice paradise offers it's amazing mocktails, cocktails and other delicious soothing cold drinks, with cups made of ice!

Road Patrol

Road Patrol at Greenhithe School

Greenhithe School have encouraged Year Six students to save our children and patrol the crossings on Greenhithe and Isobel Road.

We start at 8:15 in the morning to the bell, and in the afternoon we go from 2:45 to 3:15. We have a parent help who shows up as well just for extra safety.

At the end of the year, all the road patrolers get to go to Rainbows end! For a whole school day too! Woohoo! No admission charges to be paid by parents. Also, every cold day we do road patrol we get a free hot chocolate! Yum!

Greenhithe School is also part of Travelwise, so we have lots of cool kids who walk to school. Max the Pukeko is a good friend of ours.

House Design

How it came to be

It was just going to be another ordinary day for Room 23. We were all prepared and to use to it.

Mrs Bate, our awesome and very good looking classroom teacher was unprepared to be shocked out of her socks in five seconds. She had no idea that she would say it, but she did.

She came out of her office in teacher like manner and exclaimed to us all, "I AM BORED."

Her students and herself were utterly shocked. I felt like it would be right if her words blew us 20 feet out of the classroom!

Thank goodness it didn't happen though!

"Lets do something different today."

That would be worth another good 25 feet of flying.

So somehow, those few words lead to the decision (made by all of us) that each and every one of us students could design our own houses!!! We are now in the middle of making birds eye view draft plans.

Schoolgen

Schoogen Greenhithe School

Schoolgen is a cool organisation run by Genesis Energy. Genesis Energy is a company that is trying to get all the buildings in New- Zealand with solar panels on the roofs. Schoolgen was created to teach children the power of solar. It is a New Zealand owned company, and I'm sure they're proud to be NZ owned, for 80% of New Zealand is solar power! In Australia, they're 80% not solar power. So all the Kiwis can be proud!

So anyway, a lady called Maggie came in to talk to the School Leaders about solar energy, and I learnt a lot! Our school has a successful solar panel on the roof of our school library and staff room. We have almost a directly north facing roof, where the sun shines most during the day in New Zealand.

In the holidays when only the Principal and the care taker are here, our school pretty much runs on solar power!

Apparently, our school power bill is well over $20,000 a year, and we're trying to get that down by $500 a month, so our yearly power bill would be a bit less than twenty grand. That would just be ace.

At our school, the School Leaders have organised a group that go round all the classes in the school checking if the classrooms are saving power. We are called the Power Rangers! Lights, heaters, computers, projectors and other things such as laptops etc are all things we check for every two weeks. On assembly weeks.

At assembly, we announce the best class from junior, middle and senior syndicate. The winning class from each syndicate gets to play with three solar cars until the next assembly.
